About the Course

Beyond the Individual: Substance Use & the Family System is a 1-hour CE training designed to help mental health professionals understand substance use through a family-systems lens. Substance use rarely affects only one person. Throughout this training, we’ll explore how substance use disorders can impact emotional well-being, relationships, communication, trust, finances, attachment, family roles, and children. Participants will also explore practical clinical considerations including healthy boundaries vs. enabling, individual and family therapy, supporting recovery systems, and resources for individuals and families. You’ll also receive a downloadable clinical toolkit with worksheets, family-system mapping tools, clinical questions, and resources you can use in practice. Texas BHEC 50% Rule Eligible Presented by a Texas LPC-S who meets BHEC’s approved CE-provider criteria.

About Your Instructor

I'm Dr. Desiree' Stephens, a Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor, Approved Clinical Supervisor, National Certified Counselor, counselor educator, and private practice owner. Across my work as a clinician, supervisor, and educator, one thing continues to matter: we cannot fully understand people without considering the systems around them. I created this training to help clinicians look beyond the individual when substance use enters the therapy room. My hope is that you'll leave with a better understanding of what families may be carrying and practical ways to support them without blame, judgment, or making them responsible for someone else's recovery.
